Mar de Jade was created in 1983 in the spirit of active community service, of gratitude for the natural environment, and of the cultivation of genuine friendships. It was born from the dream of Dr. Laura del Valle to practice rural medicine by the ocean while running a Yoga Retreat & Wellness Center for visitors. At the time there was no electricity, running water or buildings, it was all jungle. Laura moved to Chacala with her siblings, José Enrique and Om in an old school bus and they lived in thatched huts, with kerosene lighting and ice-block refrigeration. The first visitors to Mar de Jade were medical students from various American Universities who came to do international rotations.
Over the years, the program grew and so did the infrastructure. In the mid 90's, the first group, a Sufi Retreat (who is still coming yearly!) arrived at Mar de Jade. Since then, we have expanded to accommodate many Retreats & Workshops (Yoga Retreats, Meditation Retreats) throughout the year and vacationing families during the holidays. We continue to have an excellent relationship with our neighbors here in the fishing village as well as in nearby farming towns, and a percentage of Mar de Jade's income and staff time is dedicated to supporting our Community Projects.
The Ocean of Zen Sangha
The Ocean of Zen Sangha is a community of practitioners that has formed through the years, thanks to the vision and great support of Dr. Laura del Valle, and her great collaborative relationship with teachers Roshi Norman Fischer and Ven Gou Yuan Fa Shi, who both have lead retreats each year in Mar de Jade over the last 20 years Dr. del Valle has maintained a regular practice in Mar de Jade, sitting with her staff and guests. We now have the presence of Sensei Rick Slone, Dharma successor of Roshi Norman Fischer; as a teacher in residence holding daily practice and weekly dharma talks. This is a great opportunity for people in the Riviera Nayarita who wish to practice Zen.
